Eurodiaconia[edit]

Eurodiaconia is a network of churches and Christian organisations that provide social and healthcare services and advocate for social justice. The organisation's secretariat is located in Brussels, Belgium. The highest decision-making body is the Annual General Meeting [1], hosted by alternate member organisations across Europe every year. Its membership represents 51 national and regional organisations in 33 countries and territories. Eurodiaconia's stated mission is to work for just and transformative social change across Europe.[2]Eurodiaconia's members are active in tackling poverty and social exclusion, providing social and long-term health care services to the most deprived.

History[edit]

Diaconal work

The word "diaconia" is Ancient Greek for "service" and in the biblical sense it means love for one's neighbour[3]. Diaconal work dates back to the New Testament and has traditionally been delivered by churches.[4] It is commonly understood as ‘Christian social practice' that does not distinguish between Christians and non-Christians but instead aims to promote social inclusion and justice.[5]Today, diaconal work is also carried out by independent or church-related NGOs.

Eurodiaconia was duly formed and registered as a NGO in Strasbourg, France, in 1995. In 2008, the legal entity was transferred and registered in Belgium as a not-for-profit international association.

Eurodiaconia's highest decision-making body is the Annual General Meeting (AGM). This is hosted by alternate member organisations across Europe. Each year the network's members decide on the strategy and work plan for the coming year and discuss any other pressing issues. In 2019 the AGM was held in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland.[6] Eurodiaconia is a registered NGO in Belgium and receives financial support from the European Union Programme for Employment and Social Innovation "EaSi" (2014 - 2020).[7] Eurodiaconia's main sources of income are Membership Fees and Contributions and the operating grant from the European Commission. [8]

Eurodiaconia's work[edit]

Eurodiaconia links its member organisations to develop ideas and influence policies impacting poverty and social exclusion, and social and health care services. Eurodiaconia's work is split into three areas:[9] Advocacy, work with member organisations and research on diaconia and Christian social practice.

Eurodiaconia's policy areas include:

  • Poverty and social exclusion
  • Social and health care services
  • Rebalancing social and economic policies

The European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN)

Eurodiaconia is also a member of EAPN, which is involved in various initiatives fighting poverty and social exclusion. The body comprises both NGOs and grass-root organisation active in European member states as well as organisations active in the whole of Europe like Eurodiaconia.[12][13]

Social Services Europe

Its stated aim is to create the right economic, social and legal conditions for social and health care organisations to carry out their work in Europe as well as redressing the lack of data on social issues in the sector [14]. On the 1st of July 2019, Eurodiaconia assumed the rotating Presidency of the network for six months, which entails Eurodiaconia will chair the meetings of the Board and General Working Group. [15]
