The Ḷḷinares conflict was a series of tribal confrontations lasting from c., 205 BC until c., 204 BC, fought near the present-day Asturias province of Spain. The conflict took the form of tribe-like warfare between the pre-Celtic Indo-Europeans and a small settlement of Titii (also spelled Tithii) Celtiberians who had just arrived in the region after fleeing their lands in the upper Tajuña valley.[1][2]
The conflict is unique as it demonstrates that Indo-Europeans and Celtiberians did not always cooperate, contradicting many period observations, such as those of Martial in his epigrams.[3]
Several archeological digs were undertaken by Barry Cunliffe in the 1980s and 90s revealed the first evidence of a conflict taking place, the details of this dig are discussed in his book, "The Ancient Celts".[4] Recent research undertaken by students from Universidad de Salamanca have revealed with the carbon-dating of fractured bones found in Cunliffe's excavations and a 2012 excavation that the conflict occurred late in the 2nd Century BCE, predating the First and Second Celtiberian Wars which took place in the central and east parts of the Iberian peninsula 20-50 years later. [1][5]
The name "Ḷḷinares conflict" was derived from a village near where the bones were found in a 2012 excavation.
