One of the major talking points of the campaign where the controversies surrounding Parker Space. In August 2017 he was criticized by posing in front of Confederate flag, which was superimposed with a picture of Hank Williams Jr.'s face. The inscription on the flag read: "If the South would've won, we would've had it made."[4] Later in the month a recording surfaced of him calling his opponent Kate Matteson a "bitch". "[...] And you can put that on the record. She is (an) elitist 1 percenter, an elitist who's a bitch. Gina, I've never met. I can't say anything bad about her. But Kate, I can. Because I know she's a bitch." [5] This made the race more competitive for the democrats in this district. The final results where closer than previous elections. The democrats gained around 23,000 votes, but Space and Wirths still won handily. Parker Space won a third term in the Assembly while Harold J. Wirths was elected to his first term.[citation needed]
