The 2021 Northern League, previously known as Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Premier for sponsorship reasons, is the 57th season of second tier football in New Zealand, and the 1st season of the new format, after the restructuring of football in New Zealand. It is the top tier of winter football in the Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty provinces. Starting in the 2021 season, the top 4 teams will qualify to a National competition to crown a national champion. They will join 3 teams from the Central Region, 2 teams from the Southern Region and the Wellington Phoenix Reserves. This national competition will also act as qualifiers to the Oceania Champions League.[1] North Shore United are the current defending champions, winning the 2019 season. The season started on the 27th March 2021, and runs till 28th August.[2]

Teams[edit]

Changes[edit]

There were no promotions or relegations in the 2020 season due to it being cut short by COVID-19. Northern Rovers joined the league for the 2021 season, as Forrest Hill Milford merged with Glenfield Rovers at the end of 2020. They take Forrest Hill's place in the league this season.[3] Another new side starting in 2021 will be West Coast Rangers after the merger of Waitakere City with Norwest United towards the end of 2020. They take Waitakere City's place in the league.

Auckland City also joined the league replacing sister club Central United, following the reformation of the New Zealand Football system.
