The 4:51 Podcast[1] is a supporter show dedicated to Detroit City FC, a soccer club representing Detroit, Michigan. The show was launched on March 7, 2019.
Namesake[edit]
The 4:51 Podcast was named after the infamous "4:51 Match"[2] between Detroit City and AFC Ann Arbor on July 7, 2017, at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck. This match included a packed house at Keyworth Stadium and was a battle for the top of the table in the National Premier Soccer League's Great Lakes Conference. The match was delayed due to torrential downpour and thunder/lightning after 4 minutes and 51 seconds of play. Despite numerous rain delays and the match eventually being called off due to this weather,[3] supporters of Detroit City FC remained in the stands singing and chanting for 90+ minutes. This display of community devotion inspired the creator to name the podcast after 4:51 as a representation of devotion to community and club.
Show format[edit]
The show has taken on various formats over its first four seasons, but has always included elements of match updates, tackling issues related to supporter culture, connecting listeners to the happenings of the city of Detroit, building community among supporters of Detroit City FC, delivering blistering critiques on the state of soccer in America, humorous skits pertaining to opposing clubs, and interviews of supporters and players on the men's and women's side of the crest. The show provides a superior quasi-professional presentation to its listeners.
Music[edit]
Music for the 4:51 Podcast has always included local talent in Detroit and broader metro region. Bad Assets, J Navarro & The Traitors, The Essentials, The Dirty Notion, 1592 & The Hooligans, Abbsinthe, Superdot, Detroit Riddim Crew, and Red The White Boy are among the bands/artists that have been included in the shows production.
