8th Battalion, The Rifles (8 RIFLES) is a reserve light infantry battalion of The Rifles under the command of 38th (Irish) Brigade based in the City of Durham.
Before Army 2020[edit]
Before Army 2020 the battalion didn't exist as it was a created as a result of the army reforms. The battalion can trace its history to D (RIFLES) Company, 5th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.[2]
Army 2020 and After[edit]
As part of Army 2020 the battalion was created and paired with the 2nd Battalion of the same regiment. It was raised in 2017 and became active in early 2018.[3][2]

Freedom of the City[edit]
In September of 2018 the battalion was awarded the Freedom of the City for Wakefield.[14]
