The 907 incident, also referred to as 907 Massacre or Minping 5540 Incident, refers to the tragedy in July 1990 when members of Taiwanese Army Police forcibly boarded a fishing boat. The boat, used by fishing peoples of Ping’tan county, Fujian Province of Mainland China, had 76 persons onboard when it was detained by Taiwanese Army Police. Having overcrossed the Taiwan abyss, it was boarded for “overstepping borders” and “illegal smuggling”. However, due to poor treatment and dehumanization of the fisherman, at least 25 people were killed, a vast number were severely harmed and 29 survived, with many still missing. [1]

This incident caused a major uproar in Chinese public opinion, resulting a major issue for cross-strait relationships. The incident was so severe that the International Red Cross supervised both sides signing the “Jin’men Treaty” to preserve safe passage between both sides. [1]

Order of Events[edit]

The Taiwanese coast guard were at Yilan prefecture when they forcibly boarded the ship, covering the eyes of the crew members with black cloths, forced them within the small compartments inside of the ship, and used large nails to prevent opening of the doors, even adding weights to the top of the hatches. The entire crew of Min’ping 5540 was forced into various small cabins, including 27 forced into a cabin which was one meter in height and three in width. Conditions were not only overcrowded and overheated, but were also lacking in water, food, and oxygen. Although there was great clamour and call for help among the fishermen, including smashing their hands and heads, there was no care given. Eventually, one after another were suffocated and crushed to death together. One of the surviving fisherman was found in a tiny area and on verge of suffocation. [1][2]

Eventually the vessel was found by Chinese fishermen from Fujian Province. When they opened the compartment that had been overcrowded, they found 25 bodies and one living man on verge on unconsciousness, who told them the story of what happened.

Aftermath[edit]

Aftermath from Mainland China was tremendous, as it led to great outcries in public opinion and the media. Most of public opinion and media coverage on mainland China was focused on the poor treatment and inhumane methods used in detaining the victims. The incident is believed widely responsible for worsening of relations between the two sides of the strait. [3]
