A-Plan Insurance is a leading UK-based distributor of motor and household insurance policies to SMEs and individuals. It also specialises in a number of high-net worth and commercial niches, and in providing policies for foreign speaking customers.

Established in 1963 in Oxford, A-Plan has over 50 years’ experience as an insurer on the local high-street and currently has a network of 90 branches throughout the UK. A-Plan Insurance is part of the A-Plan Group which has continued to expand in recent years and now includes Assured Futures, vast:visibility..[1], KGM Underwriting Services[2] and Endsleigh[3].

The company employs around 1,200 people and has over 500,000 clients.

The company’s founders were Tom Duggan and David Saville, who built up the business from a single shop in 1963 to 54 branches when they sold their stake in 2008 in a management buy-out[4]. Carl Shuker, who has been with the company since he joined as a school leaver in the early 80’s, became CEO in 2001, and led the first MBO with Brian Mole[5] Equistone took a majority holding in 2008 and the company continued to growth, increasing revenue to c£73m for the financial year ending in February 2015. During its investment period, Equistone worked with the A-Plan management team to develop the business, opening 19 new branches and increasing headcount to over 970 employees[6]

HgCapital bought the Equistone stake April 2015[7]. HgCapital have supported A-Plan with ongoing and future projects, including sales and marketing initiatives, recruitment of senior executives, support on M&A development and an upgrade to the legacy broker administration system.
