ASME B29

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

ASME B29 is a Standards Committee under the American Soceity of Mechanical Engineers. This committee deals with all Codes and Standards pertaining to chains and other related devices.

ASME B29 Chains, Attachments, and Sprocket for Power Transmission and Conveying[edit]

ASME B29 is comprised of experts from all fields and a variety of different companies of the industry who are interested in improving engineering standards and documentation. B29 operates under the Board of Standardization and Testing. The committee works to actively publish new American National Standards, as well as revise current ASME B29 Standards to maintain relevance. All committees and members within ASME operate according to the procedures and precedents set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The B29 Standards Committee is also responsible for the United States Technical Advisory Group for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 100.

B29 currently meets yearly in conjunction with the American Power Transmission Association. All of ASME's Committee meetings welcome public guests and visitors.

History[edit]

Need for standards that provide internchangeability and uniformity within the industry was first recognized by the American Chain Association back in the early 1900s. B29 was originally organized in 1924 by the American Standards Association with ASME, AGMA, and SAE as sponsors. A subcommittee on roller chains was established to study modern practices of chain manufactuere and usge. This led to the approval and publishing of B29a-1930, Roller Chain, Sprockets, and Cutters in 1930. Over the years, this document has been revised, renamed, and re-established multiple times, but still exists today, now known as B29.1-2011. Many documents have been adapted and modified with metric units for international use.

Charter[edit]

The charter of the ASME B29 Chains, Attachments & Sprockets for Power Transmission Standards Committee current is:

Standardization of chains, attachments, and sprockets for power transmission and conveying.

All actions performed by the Standards Committee abide by this and strive to achieve this goal.
