Melissa M. Brown was born January 13, 1999. She was adopted at the age of 4 by Joseph and Monique Brown. Melissa and her brother Franklin A. Brown were adopted together and their older sister, Mar'lea Reid, was adopted by Sherry Reid. They have more than nine other siblings.
Melissa is a Georgia ranked swimmer, placing top 10 in the 50-meter freestyle 8 years in a row. Brown placed third in the state in 2016. In 2017 she competed in the APS championship and took home the first place title in the Girls 50 yard free, with a time of 24.96. Brown was a 3 time Scholastic All-American in High school and competed in the 2017 Junior National Speedo championships, but qualified 4 years in a row prior.
In 2017 brown committed to swim for The University of North Carolina Asheville, but took a gap year her sophomore year. She was the first African-American to swim and receive a scholarship from the university.
Brown also is a track runner, competing for 3 years at Grady High School. She placed top 5 at Atlanta Regions in the 200 and 400 meter. In her junior year, she joined the UNCA Women's Track and Field team, specializing in sprints.
Melissa is training to swim in the 2024 Paris Olympics, with the team City of Atlanta Dolphins (CAD) under the coaching of Tommy Jackson.

At the University of North Carolina Asheville, brown works alongside of the Athletic Director as the SAD ( Studen Assistant to The Athletic Director.
She also is a sportswriter for the Blue Banner, the school newspaper.
