A Thing of Magic (2019)[edit | edit source]

A Thing of Magic [1] is a Marathi feature-film - written, directed and produced by debutante director Nithin Anil, an independent filmmaker from Kerala. It is slated to have its World Premiere in the India Story section at the 21st Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star 2019, alongside films such as Axone, Aamis etc.[2]

The entire film's cast consisted of first-time and non-professional actors, who were all residents of the village of Arale - a nonedescript village in Satara, Maharashtra - the village where the story is set in. All the actors were found from the village. Most of them were not by predetermined choice. They were approached, found, and brought to the set by knocking on doors on the day a particular scene was to be shot. Around a hundred people from the village acted in the film. [3]

Plot[edit | edit source]

Gundu Kaakka is a struggling harmonium player, who aspires to join a local drama troupe. One day, after watching a 3D movie, he presents a pair of 3D glasses to his sisters, Pradnya and Pratheeksha. He tells them that the glasses give only him some magical powers. Though they initially refuse to believe him, an event soon raises the sisters' curiosity. The determined sisters set on a path to find out the truth about the glasses, along which tiny stories of the little village start to unfold. [4][5]

Production Story[edit | edit source]

The Audition Story[edit | edit source]

They turned a house in the village into a makeshift audition camp. Auditions for the children’s roles were conducted in pairs. Over a hundred prospective actors turned up. A hypothetical situation was given to pairs of children. One of the pair was asked to confront the other and ask him/her about a pencil that was lent to the latter a long time ago. The latter was to counter and argue that he/she had already returned it, even though it had actually been lost. Another hypothetical situation involved two children fighting over a bottle in the classroom. When the bottle slips and breaks, both the children were to push the blame on each other. The children’s performances turned out to be amazingly spontaneous. [6]
