Adam Fenech

Adam Fenech is a Canadian climatologist working as an associate professor at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), and director of the UPEI Climate Lab.

Fenech was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto, his master's degree in environmental studies at York University, and obtained a PhD in geography from the University of Toronto in 2009.

From 1987 to 2012, Fenech was employed as a physical scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada working on climate change science and policy issues. Fenech began his work on climate change as part of the Canadian Secretariat for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

While working at Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fenech directed the Integrated Mapping Assessment Project (IMAP) lab, and the Climate Lab at the University of Toronto from 1994 to 2012.

From 1992 to 1994, Fenech was assigned to work for Harvard University on the project Social Learning in the Management of Global Atmospheric Risks.

From 1996 until present, Fenech has taught at the Smithsonian Institution in their biodiversity program at Front Royal, Virginia, US.

Fenech joined the University of Prince Edward Island in 2012 as a researcher and then as an associate professor. He designed and implemented the world's first undergraduate program in applied climate change and adaptation at UPEI's School of Climate Change and Adaptation. He directs the UPEI Climate Lab which maintains a network of systematic observations including climate stations and tidal stations. Fenech maintains the largest fleet of drones at any Canadian university including the largest drone with a 4 metre wingspan.

Fenech will be taking a sabbatical leave from UPEI in 2023 to write an applied climate change textbook. He is the author and/or editor of eight books on climate change.

Awards and recognitions[edit]

Fenech was featured in 2022 as one of the Inspiring Canadians: Forty Brilliant Canadians and Their Visions for the Nation by Mark Bulgutch.[1]

As a movie producer of PEI Climate Stories, a new series of short videos exploring the impacts of climate change on Prince Edward Island and the adaptation strategies being implemented by Prince Edward Islanders, Fenech's films have been accepted to the Charlottetown Film Festival, the SIFF - Switzerland International Film Festival, and was a semi-finalist at the Better Cities Film Festival.

Fenech received an award in 2014 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology;s Center for Collective Intelligence Climate Co-Lab for the climate change visualization tool known as CLIVE (CoastaL Impacts Visualization Environment) that allows communities to understand the risks of sea-level rise and coastal erosion using video game technology.
