Inception and Development[edit]

The play is loosely based on Gelman’s real life experience with his husband Mati, who, incidentally, served as the production photographer for the show.

Directed by S. Asher Gelman, the original Off-Broadway cast featured Brandon Haagenson (Josh), Robbie Simpson (Alex) and Patrick Reilly (Darius). The production featured set design by Ann Beyersdorfer, lighting design by Jamie Roderick, costume design by Fabian Fidel Aguilar, sound design by Alex Dietz-Kest, casting by Kate Lumpkin, dramaturgy by Mike Ross, and assistant direction by Nina Kauffman.

“Afterglow” began rehearsals on May 15th, 2017, with previews beginning June 12th, 2017. It opened on June 23rd, 2017.

Originally a two-act play, the production was reimagined, during its run, as a 90-minute one-act, which premiered on August 4, 2017.

Synopsis[edit]

Josh, a theater director, and his husband, Alex, a chemistry student, are an affluent couple in their mid-thirties in an open relationship. When they invite the younger Darius, a massage therapist, to share their bed one night, a new intimate connection begins to form, and all three men must come to terms with their individual definitions of love, loyalty, and trust as futures are questioned, relationships are shaken, and commitments are challenged.

Critical response[edit]

TheaterMania called “Afterglow” the “Runaway Hit of the Off-Broadway Season”.[1] and the Huffington Post described it as “A Steamy, Stripped Down Look at Gay Intimacy”[2]

After the two and a half hour show was cut down to a 90-minute one-act, Steven Ross from OutBuzz stated, “this new edited down version is even more engaging than when I first saw the curtain drop on these three young gay men eight months ago”.[3]
