Akhil (born 22 November 1983) is an Indian playback and ghazal singer, whose songs have been featured mainly in Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam. He is an established Carnatic singer and under the banner of the band kARNATRiix, experiments with world fusion music.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Akhil was born in Thiruvananthapuram the capital city of Kerala State. He has bachelor's degrees in science from SRM, Chennai. He is fluent in English, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil. Under the tutelage of Kamukara Purushothaman, Akhil was also exposed to music from a young age. His school teacher, Archana noticed his potential while he participated in his school's cultural programs. She took a keener interest in his talents and taught him, which is when Akhil began to comprehend fully the nuances of Carnatic singing. Akhil later tutored under M.G.Radhakrisnan, from whom, he learnt Carnatic music for seven years.

Career[edit | edit source]

Akhil is a part time musician and a full time Senior Scientific Officer at The Institute for testing & analysis of biomedical instruments[InTAB] in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, a company that was founded by Akhil's father.

Akhil's early days of being a singer involved him jamming in studios. He eventually grew to become a backing vocalist for renowned musicians like K J Yesudas, K S Chitra, K Sujatha, Hariharan, Naresh Iyer and Sonu Nigam. Extensive training in eastern as well as western music for twenty five years polished Akhil as a mature musician he evolved as a playback singer.

The second phase of Akhil’s musical career took a break beyond the borders, when he was invited by the acclaimed guitarist, John Anthony, to be the lead vocalist of his music band kARNATRiix. Akhil has performed at various stages for different musical projects of kARNATRiix namely, "Time Was", "Spectacle-Metajingle" and "Be the Change". Musical themes during these shows were all experimental blending of nature and emotions in collaborations with musicians from across the world.

TV Shows and Collaborations[edit | edit source]

Akhil was a contestant in Idea Star Singer, Season 4 in the year 2009. This introduced him to music director Sharreth, with whom he composed and released a few devotional albums.

Akhil is highly active on the popular Karaoke platform Sing-Smule as Roxvo.
