Alana Nichols (b. Chinese: 鄭雅文; pinyin: Zhèng Yǎwén; October 10, 1991[1]) is a Taiwanese-American, a travel show host and a philanthropist.  She was diagnosed with hearing loss at the age of 8-months-old.  Alana’s hearing loss was classified as profound, which is the most severe category.  She had her cochlear implant surgery in Australia and learned to speak English through Auditory-verbal therapy.[2] Shortly after her successful experimental surgery, her parents founded the Children’s Hearing Foundation in Taiwan.  She is now the host of the travel show Follow Alana.[3]

Early life and family[edit]

Born in Taipei, Taiwan[4], Alana is the daughter of Kenny Cheng, a businessman and philanthropist and Joanna Nichols.[5]  Her father is Taiwanese, while her mother is American.  She has one sister, Joy Nichols, who is three years older.  As an infant, her parents noticed that Alana did not react to sounds, including her own name, thus bringing her to the hospital for a check-up[6].  She was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of deafness known as a common cavity malformation.  Therefore, they consulted experts around the globe, many who refused to operate on Alana due to the severity and rareness of her case.  Finally, they found a doctor in Australia who agreed to perform the experimental cochlear implant[7] surgery despite the grim outlook.  Alana spent much of her childhood in intensive verbal therapy learning to hear and spea[8]k.  Alana attended Taipei American School in Taiwan and university in Australia.

Impact and influence[edit]

Alana Nichols is known as a hearing-impaired person who is able to listen and speak after learning from auditory-verbal therapy.

As a producer of Follow Alana, the show focuses on topics relating to the environment, food, animals, travel, and culture.  Alana’s hosting style and the themes she focuses on inspires people to care about various topics.[9]

The constant reminder in the show is that the only thing should be taken whenever you go trekking, camping or any kind activity in the nature is photos. The vegetarian food introduced in the show conveys the idea that vegetarian food is not only healthy but can also be delicious. As Alana is an animal lover, the reoccurring themes in the show emphasize on what human beings can do to provide animals a better living environment.  Along visiting different destinations, the place’s culture background is presented in a way to related to the local people.[10]
