Alex Markwith
Alex Markwith (born 1988, Kingston, PA) is a visual artist based in New York City. Markwith earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2011 with a major in painting and a concentration in English.
Work[edit]
Markwith's works are abstract mixed media assemblages. Though generally the pieces hang on a wall as paintings do, the artist's use of material often relates more closely to sculpture. This tendency was noted in a 2011 review of his first solo exhibition. "Roughly rendered acrylic paint layers on top of found tire rubber or metal, on top of corrugated cardboard or a wooden frame, Markwith brings an almost Suprematist attention to the solid materiality of his fodder, outlining the textural presence of each element. The works blur the line between sculpture and painting, referring to traditions of assemblage and collage in their mixed media nature".[1]
Markwith's work is included in numerous private collections as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.[2]
