Alexander Yakovlevich Sher (February 1, 1897 - October 29, 1981) was a Soviet orientalist, Sinologist, specialist in Chinese writing, translator, researcher of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences

Biography[edit]

He was born in 1897 of wealthy Jews from the bourgeoisie in Irkutsk. Father - Yakov Shleimovich (Solomonovich) Sher (born in 1864), mother - Ita Borisovna Sher. He had 2 sisters: Seraphim and Leah.

He studied from 1922 to 1926 at the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies at the economic and diplomatic departments.

From 1926 to 1931 he worked at the OGPU.

In 1938 he was repressed.

He was a researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences

He worked in the Department of Languages ​​of the Peoples of Asia and Africa of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1967-1977, and is also known primarily for his works on the problems of Chinese writing, also he translated Chinese films.

He worked on the third and fourth volumes of Ilya Mikhailovich Oshanin's "Great Chinese-Russian Dictionary" (BKRS).

The main work of Alexander Sher, in addition to scientific articles, is the monograph "What you need to know about Chinese writing", the executive editor of which was M. V. Solntsev.
