Ali Milani at NUS National Conference

Ali Milani (Ali Reza Milani) is the current Vice President (Union Development) of the National Union of Students (NUS), elected at the National Conference in April 2017 and re-elected in March 2018.[1][2][3][4] He is also a Labour Party Councillor in the ward of Heathrow Villages in the London borough of Hillingdon having been elected in the 2018 local elections.[5]

Student Politics Career[edit | edit source]

Katie Hopkins Walk-Out[edit | edit source]

Milani was involved in a public spat early on in his student politics career with media personality Katie Hopkins after staging a walkout protest of an event at Brunel University involving Hopkin's.[6][7][8] Hopkins spoke out against Milani and the students as a generation that were raised on social media and resistant to different points of view.[9][10][11]

Election on NUS NEC and Vice President Union Development[edit | edit source]

Milani was elected onto the National Executive Council of the National Union of Students in April 2016.[12] He was elected at the same conference as divisive former NUS President Malia Bouattia and was a vocal supporter of Bouattia.[13] Having spent a year on the NUS NEC, Milani would stand for and win the role of Vice President (Union Development) with 365 delegates voting for him at the conference.[14][15]

As Vice President Milani was a vocal proponent of the USS Pension strikes called by the University College Union (UCU). Appearing on Sky News and BBC, Milani would call on students from around the country to support lecturers in the efforts.[16][17] He has also been a prominent campaigner on a number of student issues, including the controversial #StudentsNotSuspects campaign against the governments Counter Terrorism and Security Act; and on University access and student fee's.[18][19][20][21][22]

At the National Conference in 2018 in Glasgow, Milani would be re-elected as Vice President with an increased vote share of 60%.[23]

Labour Party[edit | edit source]

Milani has been a Labour Party activist and supporter of Jeremy Corbyn and the Momentum group.[24] Campaigning for Corbyn in both leadership elections, Milani would publicly condemn Corbyn's opponent Owen Smith for supporting the controversial Prevent counter terrorism strategy.[25]

In the 2018 Local Elections, Milani was elected as a Labour Party councillor in the London borough of Hillingdon with 1382 votes - alongside BAME Labour vice chair June Nelson and Peter Money.[26][27][28] Ali is also active in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip party having campaigned in opposition to Boris Johnson and in the Labour Muslim Network.[29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36]
