Ali Mozaffari (Persian: علی مظفری) is an architect, scholar and writer, focused on the cultural heritage in West Asia[1] and 20th-century Persian architecture. He is an Australian Research Council Fellow and Senior Research Fellow with the Alfred Deakin Institute at Deakin University in Melbourne.[2][3]

Ali Mozaffari's scholarship "unlike most previous works on the relationship between architecture and national identity in Iran, transcends the symbolic and iconographic interpretation of architectural forms, elements and styles.[4]

Background[edit]

Ali Mozaffari studied architecture at the University of Tehran and after receiving his MArch moved to Australia. He obtained his PhD from the University of Western Australia. His PhD dissertation was written on the idea of homeland as represented the National Museum of Iran.[5]The research was the first ever interpretative study of the relationship between the museum, state ideologies and the idea of homeland.

Career[edit]

In 1996 Mozaffari won the first prize for Tabriz Municipality's National Competition.[6] Since 2011 to 2013 he conducted field research in the ancient Persian site Pasargadae which resulted in an edited volume.[7] The work was cited as an "excellent volume [that] represents and important, sophisticated, and most welcome contribution to approaching an archaeological site in Iran" in the journal Iranian Studies.[8]

Mozaffari has participated in various international academic conferences including The Association for the Study of Persianate Societies (ASPS)[9], Association for Critical Heritage Studies, Association for Iranian Studies and etc.[10][11] Mozaffari's articles have been published in journals including the International Journal of Heritage Studies and Iranian Studies.[12]

Ali Mozaffari also regularly writes and comments on the modern political situation of Iran and the Caucasus. His articles has been published on New Eastern Europe[13] and the English section of Radio Farda.[14] [15] He has been a panelist of Middle East Studies Forum on 2021 Iranian presidential election as well.[16]

Mozaffari also has been interviewed by BBC Persian Service in various occasions as an expert in cultural heritage studies.[17] [18]
