Alpha Haïti

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Alpha Haïti (formerly known as the Centre incubateur d’innovation technologique d’Haïti) is a new national technology incubator launched by the President of Haiti His Excellency Mister Jovenel Moïse in June 2 and 3 2018.  Located in the historic Ciné Triomphe Complexe in capital city Port-au-Prince, it is the largest full-feature tech and business incubator in the Caribbean.[1]

The mandate of Alpha Haïti is to promote tech entrepreneurship and spread innovative thinking throughout Haiti and its surrounding neighbor countries. A first of its kind in Haiti, the vision for Alpha is to become the entry point into the national and regional innovation ecosystems by 2021.[2]

Since its launch, Alpha Haïti hosted various community and training events in partnerships with the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, Port-au-Prince Startup Week and Banj. The decision of the Haitian government to launch Alpha incubator has received international praise from highly respected thought leaders including Tony Elumelu and Malcolm Parry of Surrey Research Park, MIT Media Lab and Startup México.

Alpha Haiti offers six core services: incubation for entrepreneurs seeking to launch new tech startups, tech and business training for the general public, conferences, networking and a rapid prototyping laboratory. Another innovative feature of the Centre is that it contains the country’s first cultural and creative industries accelerator.[3]

The incubation for entrepreneurs program is organized by cohorts of 50 people for a six months incubation phase, the goal during that time is to help turn high-potential ideas to working prototypes and new businesses. It is assumed Alpha's name is a reference to the Greek letter Αα to reflect a new beginning in Haiti's quest to revamp its economy and living standards.[4]

The Centre incubateur d’innovation technologique d’Haïti project was announced in February 2016 as a project of the Haitian Ministry of Economy and Finance.[5] Due to political gridlocks, it took over two years following the initial announcement for this major undertaking by the government of Haïti to be completed. The creation and launch of Alpha Haïti were project managed by innovation expert, Dr. Jean-Jacques Rousseau in support of a team of local public officials.[6]

Presently there is only one campus, located in Port-au-Prince, the capital; however, there is plan to set up additional Centers throughout other departments in the country. There is no cost for the incubated services, but admission for some programs are competition-based while other programs are open to the general public.
