Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Due to the decades long Kashmir conflict, Altaf was sent to become terrorist but Altaf, as a contrast, decided to become a peacemaker.[1] Altaf left Kashmir at the age of 18 after he saw years of violence.[1] He could not focus on his studies and abandoned education right after Class VIII.[1] However, his family is based in Srinagar.[2] Altaf earns money by helping people as a spiritual guide.[2]

Peace March[edit | edit source]

On September 24, 2010, he started his first walk from Mumbai to Kashmir, covering 20-30 km each day, and stopping in towns and cities to visit schools and request principals to let him speak with the students.[1] He reached Kashmir after one and a half year of walking through Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh. In 2012, he walked from Himachal Pradesh to Kashmir.[1] In 2015, he started his most recent walk from Goa to Mumbai, which took nine months and ended recently. He has until now visited over 100 schools and claims he has got support from all religions in his campaign.[1]

He has walked 7,400 km across Northern and Western India since 2010.[2] He stopped by many cities and towns to speak to school children about peace[3]. He requested school principals to give him permission to talk to school children to discuss with them about the essence of peace.[3] During one of his stopovers, Altaf was invited to a school in Ratnagiri to give a talk to students.[2]

Animal Lover[edit | edit source]

During his peace march, Altaf walked along with a trolley carrying 12 street puppies that he encouraged people to adopt to promote love for animals.[1] In his walkathon from Goa to Mumbai, Altaf picked up few ailing animals and got around six puppies adopted.[2]
