Amy Buchwald (July 24, 1961- ) is an American actress, writer, and standup comedian.

Early life[edit]

Buchwald was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her father Henry Buchwald is Professor of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering and the Owen and Sarah Davidson Wangensteen Chair in Experimental Surgery Emeritus at the University of Minnesota. Her mother Emilie Buchwald is a co-founder and former editor at the literary press Milkweed Editions. Both of her parents were Jewish émigrés from Vienna, escaping persecution from Nazi occupation.[1] She has three sisters: Claire, Dana, and Jane.

At age eleven, Buchwald began training at the Children's Theatre Company. By sixteen, she was an Actors' Equity member and a performer with the Cricket and Guthrie Theaters in the Twin Cities.

Buchwald graduated from Edina West High School in 1979 and Sarah Lawrence College in 1984.[2]

Career[edit]

After graduating from college, Buchwald contributed to the Playwrights' Center and the Women's Theater Project and produced a pilot for WCCO television. Her one-woman show Glenda From The Heart was featured on PBS.[3]

She has performed her comedy at the Improv, Upright Citizens Brigade, the Knitting Factory, the Comedy Store, and the Punch Line.[3]

Buchwald is the founder of the Mulberry Tree Group, a non-profit arts organization that seeks to confront taboo topics in art, theater, and poetry.[4]

She wrote the book and lyrics to Candy Hearts, a pop-rock musical about three couples confronting domestic violence.[5] Composer Robert Maggio wrote the music. The show had its first industry reading in 2013.

Her webseries Hot Flash: The Chronicles of Lara Tate, Menopausal Superhero debuted in 2015.[6]

Personal life[edit]

Buchwald has been married since 1998 to the actor Danny Woodburn.[7] They live in Los Angeles.
