By 1938 Ancora pens were produced in Italy with the use of Italian equipment, Italian raw materials, and performed by Italian workers and engineers[3]

Throughout its existence Ancora release multiple models exploring various production methods and materials. The ‘60s and ‘70s have seen the fountain pen industry decline due to massive introduction of the ballpoint pen throughout the world, which led the company to suspend operation[4]

The company was later reopened and resumed production modern fountain and roller pens in the ‘80s.

Technology[edit]

Throughout its existence Ancora produced pens in a variety of systems, including button-filler, lever-filler and piston-filler pens. Most of Ancora pens are open-nib pens, however one model - the Calamus - was a hooded nib type pen. A constant distinctive trait of Ancora pens is the 18 Karat gold nib engraved with an anchor, the company’s logo, manufactured onsite.

A proprietary alloy developed by Ancora (named “Zanio” after the company’s founder) was used during the World War II for production of nibs in light of scarcity of materials, however was later discontinued in favor of gold[5].

Earlier pens were decorated by chasing hard rubber, with precious metals, marbled celluloid and even chrome finish. Currently though the company decorates its pens using techniques such as miniature lacquer painting and incrustation the body frame of pens with mother-of-pearls pieces. These techniques are performed by hand.
