André Rieu sr.

Andries Antonie Rieu (André Rieu senior) (Haarlem, May 12th 1917 – Maastricht, February 4th 1992) was a Dutch conductor. He was father of six, amongst which André Rieu (junior).[1]

Rieu studied piano, organ and conducting at the Utrechts Conservatorium and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He completed his conducting studies with Willem van Otterloo and in 1949 was appointed conductor of the Maastrichts Stedelijk Orkest, as per 1955 the Limburg Symphony Orchestra, where he remained principal conductor until 1980. Rieu made several recordings with the Amsterdam Chamber Orchestra[2] (currently Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra) featuring a.o. Frans Brüggen, Herman Krebbers, Theo Olof and Hans Henkemans.[3]

Rieu took particular interest in the French repertoire and with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra introduced a number of works of Francis Poulenc and Olivier Messiaen to the Netherlands. Also contemporary music had his attention; he premiered works of a.o. Dutch composers Otto Ketting, Jurriaan Andriessen and Jan Mul[4]. Rieu conducted the Dutch National Opera several times (twice in context of the Holland Festival[5]. Frequently he conducted outside of the Netherlands, including a number of opera projects with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
