André Schneider (born March 10, 1978) is a German actor, writer, and filmmaker.
Born in Hildesheim and raised in the nearby village of Harsum, Schneider spent his childhood partly in Christchurch, Dorset, Folkestone, Putney, Clonmel, and Underwood, Iowa. He took classes in Tap-dancing and Musical theatre at an early age and performed in school plays and amateur films as a teenager. In 1995, he wrote and starred in his first One-man show, Holocaust. André Schneider liest Paul Celan which he performed in his native Germany. He later recorded his first album, Sleepless Cities with material by Kurt Weill, Friedrich Hollaender, Tori Amos, Burt Bacharach and others.
In 1998 he graduated from high school and began studying Indology and History at the Freie Universität Berlin. He also took acting lessons at the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York and started his career as a stand-up comedian in England and Ireland. In addition to German, he speaks English, French, and Spanish fluently.
His first movie as a writer-producer-actor was Deed Poll co-starring Barbara Kowa. His production company Vivàsvan Pictures, founded in 2003, continued to produce movies in Germany, England, and France until 2018. Most Vivàsvan productions dealt with LGBT subjects. His internationally most acclaimed pictues were Men to Kiss, One Deep Breath (co-starring Manuel Blanc and directed by Antony Hickling), and Le deuxième commencement.
In 2013, he published the first biography of Austrian actress Marisa Mell to great acclaim. He had been working on the book for seven years. Between 2004 and 2014, Schneider wrote and published a total number of eight books, both in English and German. He also wrote for magazines like Männer and Séparée as well as for several movie blogs.
After the success of One Deep Breath, Schneider continued to work in France. Under the direction of Alexandre Vallès, he co-wrote and starred in Boulevard Voltaire, a movie about the Bataclan terrorist attack of 2015. The movie premiered in Serbia and subsequently became a festival hit in South Africa and Belgium. In March 2017, Antony Hickling directed him in Frig, a movie losely based on 120 days of sodom by Marquis de Sade. Later that year, he co-wrote, produced and starred in the psychological horror film Les Fantômes, again under the direction of Alexandre Vallès. Other movie credits include Sur les traces de ma mère, Le cadeau, and Alex und der Löwe.
As of 2018, Schneider divides his time between Berlin and Paris.
