Andrea H. Tapia is an Associate Professor in the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA. Tapia is the founder of the 3C Informatics Applied Research Center (a scholastic consortium focused on the use of technologies to empower physical communities) and her main research focuses are Crisis Informatics, Sociology of Technology, Social Informatics, and Socio-Technical Systems. Her work has contributed to policy-making by The United Nations.[1] and the Obama Administration, as well as emergency management and relief organizations such as NetHope and The Red Cross[2], and Mission Critical Partners[3].

Tapia has held research positions at Pennsylvania State University, University of Arizona, University of Costa Rica, the Technical University of Valencia, and IMT Mines Albi (France).

Background[edit]

Tapia studied at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque and was awarded her PhD in 2000 in Sociology of Science and Technology. She has also received her B.A. from SUNY Potsdam (Summa Cum Laude) and Masters Degrees from the University of New Mexico and the Universidad de las Americas (Mexico).

Aurorasaurus[edit]

In 2015, Tapia in conjunction with NASA researchers developed “Aurorasaurus”, a system that consolidates Twitter social media data on aurora borealis related tweets to produce a real-time map of sightings in the northern hemisphere[4]. Funded through the National Science Foundation’s INSPIRE program, its power was illustrated during the 2015 St. Patrick’s day storm, gathering over 35,000 tweets through apps the Aurorasaurus website[5].

"And Communications for All: A Policy Agenda for the New Administration"[edit]

In 2008, Tapia was one of 16 leading communications policy scholars to consolidate these varying telecommunications policy perspectives into a single agenda. This book, And Communications for All: A Policy Agenda for the New Administration" was prepared for and presented to the incoming Barack Obama Administration in 2009[6][7]
