Andrew Richards (born 14 January 1997) is an Australian amateur golfer. He won the 2021 New South Wales Amateur Championship at Magenta Shores Golf Club, beating Jeffrey Guan 4&3 in the final.[1] He also won the 2021 Riversdale Cup at Riversdale Golf Course defeating 2020 champion Lawrence Curtis by three strokes[2]

Early Career[edit]

Richards was a talented junior sportsman who enjoyed representative honors in Australian Rules Football and Cricket. Richards was a member of the Sydney Swans Academy, a program for talented footballers on the horizon of first grade selection.

It wasn't until a move to Atlanta, Georgia in 2013, at age 16, that Richards began to actively pursue the sport of golf. Starting off a handicap of 30, he unexpectedly made the Alpharetta High School golf in his first year of regular playing. A dedication to practice resulted in a dramatic decline in his handicap, with a strong focus on perfecting his short game. Richards practiced regularly at the Golf Club of Georgia, home to the Georgia Tech Golf Team and PGA tour professionals including Ollie Schnierderjans, Richie Ramsay and Roberto Castro.

In 2015, Richards returned to Australia as a scratch golfer to begin his competitive amateur career.

Amateur Career[edit]

In 2017, Richards played six events, with his best finish T3 in the South Australian Amateur. He had T10 finishes at the Mandurah Open in Perth and the QLD Amateur Championship. In 2018, Richards was selected for the NSW State Golf Team where he participated in the Australian Men's Interstate Team Matches. He travelled to the United States in this year, recording a T13 at the Rice Planters Championship at Snee Farm. His best finish domestically in this year was a T9 in the Victorian Amateur.

Swing troubles and injury plagued Richards in 2019 and 2020, his best finish coming in a return trip to the United States, a T11 at the famed Dogwood Invitational. During this time, Richards reduced his competitive playing schedule significantly, switched coaches and took time away from the limelight to rebuild his golf swing.[3]

In 2021, Richards opened the year with a win at the New South Wales Amateur Championship , defeating Jeffrey Guan 4&3. He followed this win a second win at the Riversdale Cup, with four consecutive rounds in the 60s to beat 2020 winner Lawrence Curtis by three shots. T10's at the Victorian Amateur and the Concord Cup helped push Richards inside the T250 in official WAGR ratings.

In 2021, Richards held the lead briefly in the afternoon of the first round of the NSW Open at Concord Golf Course at -6.[4]

In 2022, Richards was recalled into the NSW Golf State Team, following wins in the previous year at the NSW Amateur and Riversdale Cup.

His current home club is Pennant Hills Golf Club, where he holds the course record 61 (-10). He is coached by Rachel Bailey.[5]

Personal Life[edit]

Richards enjoys watching sports and is keen supporter of the Collingwood Football Club[6]

Richards notes his favorite player in golf is Jordan Spieth[7]

Richards has two brothers, Michael and Ryan, both scratch handicap golfers.
