Andrew Kim is an American national security expert and candidate for the US House of Representatives in New Jersey's third congressional district.[1][2][3]

Background[edit | edit source]

Andy Kim grew up in Marlton, New Jersey, in the state's more rural south, the son of South Korean immigrants.[4] He graduated from the University of Chicago in 2004, and earned a doctorate in international relations from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.[5]

Kim was assigned by the US State Department to work under generals David Petraeus and John Allen in Afghanistan in 2011.[6][5] He was later a White House staffer and national security advisor to US President Barack Obama.[7] Kim served from 2013 until 2015 as the Iraq director for the Obama administration's National Security Council at the Pentagon, and was Obama's "point man" for Iraq and then ISIS.[8] He was considered a relatively junior chief at the time.[9]

Stacey May, the former National Security Council director of war crimes and atrocity prevention, credited Kim with swiftly developing a plan that saved over 10,000 Yazidis from advancing forces from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.[4]

Congressional Campaign[edit | edit source]

Kim announced his campaign in June 2017 to challenge incumbent Republican Tom MacArthur for the third congressional district seat in New Jersey. The announcement came after MacArthur helped revive an attempt by US President Donald Trump to repeal major sections of the Affordable Care Act, notably protections to those with pre-existing conditions, which includes Kim's own son.[5]

The third district reaches across the southern part of New Jersey from Burlington County along the Delaware River to Ocean County in the East along the Jersey Shore.

Kim won an uncontested primary to the Democratic Party's nominee for the third congressional district seat on June 5. He will face Tom MacArthur in the general election on November 6, 2018. Kim has earned the endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden.[10]

Kim's campaign has garnered national enthusiasm, earning the first-time candidate over $1 million in the second quarter of 2018, with donations coming in from all 50 states.[3][11]

Apart from Rep. MacArthur's work to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Kim has gone after Rep. MacArthur's vote passing the Republicans' sweeping 2017 Tax Overhaul, The new tax law actually lowers taxes for six times as many New Jersey residents as it raises them for even after limiting state and local tax deductions.{12}
