Angel of Anywhere

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Angel of Anywhere is a 2017 American film directed by James Kicklighter, written by Casey Nelson and Kate Murdoch, starring Briana Evigan, Ser'Darius Blain, and David A. Gregory in lead roles and introducing Axel Roldos.

According to Axel Roldos' personal blog[1] and in an review by Crushed Celluloid [2], Roldos met director James Kicklighter at the 2017 Atlanta Film Festival VIP party, where Kicklighter was screening his The Atlanta Journal-Constitution documentary, Digital Edition...[3]

Roldos, an aspiring actor, pitched the idea to Kicklighter about making a film, who was initially hesitant. However, after further conversation and discussion, Kicklighter assembled his creative team and developed a story around Roldos.

In a review by That Moment In [4], they write "the film is about an empathetic stripper who plays therapist to the many damaged clientele and co-workers who frequent the popular Anywhere Bar." They also note the film is an unconventional take on the genre, stating "While the setting isn’t exactly a new one of course, it’s far less about the stage show or even the relationships of the dancers, but rather the impact of one man who serves importance in ways even he’s not entirely aware of." This is echoed by One Film Fan, "the first inclination was to decline screening it, having a pre-conceived notion about what direction events depicted might venture to...[but] under the surface burns a deftly written, intelligently executed, deeply human, dramatic exploration into the very heart of what it means to have the desire to see things that are broken fixed."

The trailer was released on September 9th, 2017.[5][6][7]

Reviews have been generally positive, Crushed Celluloid stating, "it’s a perfect example of concept, structure, and execution," echoed by IndyRed as "an exercise in near flawless design and execution."

Other critics, like[2] UK Film Review, have noted "the aesthetic and mise en scéne are just as integral to the movie's power as the characters and dialogue...characters get laid bare in a stark environment by a character who emanates an ethereal presence." [8] The latter is a repeated theme among critics, Film Snob Reviews noting Angel's character as "newcomer Roldos quite literally shines on screen as he becomes an unconventional guardian angel." [9]

Critics have noted Briana Evigan's performance as a highlight, including One Film Fan, "Evigan’s shy, uncertain, questioning everything Michelle is a study in totally awkward yet honest restlessness looking for an outlet she isn’t even sure why she’s seeking,"[10] Screencritix, "Briana Evigan, who also starred in a couple of Step Up films, as well as Sorority Row and as Sonja in the From Dusk Till Dawn series brings some gravitas to the production and is very strong in her performance as Michelle."[11]

In their Grade B review, Film Snob Reviews criticized the film for "a few exchanges between secondary characters that slightly tarnish the superb subtly of the film." [9]

It was announced that the film won the Accolade Competition Award of Excellence in September 2017.[12]
