U.S. Army Area Support Group Afghanistan (ASG-A), headquartered at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, is the command that plans, executes and manages base life support services for more than 35,000 personnel stationed throughout the Combined Joint Operations Area Afghanistan (CJOA). These personnel include U.S. military, Coalition forces, Department of Defense civilians and contractors who contribute to the train, advise assist mission known as Operation Resolute Support.

In addition to its headquarters at Bagram Airfield, ASG-A has seven forward operating bases, known as FOBs, where ASG-A staff members provide base life support to U.S. and coalition forces conducting missions that range from train and advise to provincial reconstruction and security throughout Afghanistan.

These FOBs include Dahlke West (formerly FOB Shank located in Logar Province), Lightning (Paktia Province), Gamberi (Laghman Province), Fenty (Nangarhar Province), Kandahar Airfield (Helmand Province), Shorab (Helmand Province) and Dwyer (Helmand Province).

The services and infrastructure provided by the ASG-A include public works, emergency services, billeting, human resources, logistics, training, fitness and recreation, mail and medical--many of the services needed to support the efficient operation of several small towns.

Geography[edit]

ASG-A Headquarters is located in eastern Afghanistan's Parwan Province, approximately 25 miles north of the nations capital city of Kabul. It is surrounded by the Hindu Kush Mountains and sits at an elevation of nearly 5,000 feet above sea level.

History[edit]

In March 2012 the Bagram Support Group (BSG) was initially established to enable successful Coalition Force Operations in Afghanistan. With the U.S. president’s decision to remain in Afghanistan at current troop strength, the focus of the BSG transitioned from 'descope and complete retrograde' to optimization based on the need to keep strategic options available to senior leaders. In October 2016 the BSG transitioned into the ASG-A, which brought FOBs Kandahar, Fenty, Dwyer, Shorab, Gamberi and Lightning under the leadership of the newly formed command.
