Arthur Thomas Scurr, MBE,[1](March 18, 1928 - December 14, 2003) was a hardware businessman who received an MBE for community service in 1985. He was best known for his position as CEO of Mt Gravatt Hardware Store, Scurr Bros.https://www.facebook.com/scurrbrosfriends/[2][3][4][5][6] When the Queensland branch of the Mitre_10 organisation was formed in 1961 as a body of eight hardware merchants, Arthur Scurr was elected founding Chairman. He held the chairmanship while the organisation (which combined hundreds of independent hardware stores) grew into one of Australia's largest retailers.[7][8][9][10][11]He was the Queensland chairman for the chain for almost three decades, and national chairman for two years.[12][7][8][9][10]

Battle for Mt Gravatt Showgrounds[edit]

In addition to his business interests, Arthur Scurr fought a long legal battle to ensure that the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds were held as a community resource for the conduct of an annual show, and eventually succeeded in his quest before the Privy Council.[13][14][15][16]

History of Mt Gravatt[edit]

Arthur Scurr wrote a history of the Brisbane suburb of Mt Gravatt, entitled "The first 150 years : Mt. Gravatt from 1825 to 1975".[17]

Inquiry into Security of Payments for subcontractors[edit]

In 1995, he was appointed to head an inquiry into security of payments within the building industry in Queensland. His report recommended that developers and construction companies be required to put aside 10 per cent of a project's costs up front, so that sub-contractors could be assured of payment if the builder failed.[18][19][20][21]

Community Involvement[edit]

Arthur Scurr received an MBE for services to the community:[22][23] Some of his involvements included the Council of the Mt Gravatt College of Advanced Education, the Mt Gravatt TAFE College Council, the Mt Gravatt Building Society Group and Mt Gravatt Meals on Wheels service. Mr Scurr was co-author of the book "Educating Your Child".[24][25] His passion for local issues in Mount_Gravatt,_Queensland led him to be chairman of the Mt Gravatt Central Chamber of Commerce for 11 years,[26][27]a member of the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds Trust and a patron of Mt Gravatt East State School. In 1995, Griffith University made Arthur Scurr a Doctor of the University.[28][29]

Mt Gravatt Amateur Movies[edit]

As a young man growing up in Mt Gravatt, Arthur Scurr was part of an amateur filming making company who filmed silent movies. Arthur and his brother, Albert, featured as actors in the films in which they rode horses through the local bushland.[30]
