Asia Research Institute

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore was established by the University's then President Shih Choon Fong in 2001, as a university-level institute catering particularly to the research needs of the non-science faculties: Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), Law, Business and Architecture. Then Dean of FASS, Prof Lily Kong, was appointed pro-tem Director, while an international search was initiated for a substantive director. The subsequent directors were Professors Anthony Reid (2002-7), Lily Kong (2008-11), Prasenjit Duara (2011-15), and Jonathan Rigg (2016-18).

ARI aimed "to provide a world-class focus and resource for research on the Asian region, located at one of its communication hubs." It quickly developed several research clusters, including "Migration", "Religion and Globalisation", "Cultural Studies" and "the Changing Family". Its appointments were chiefly short-term, including a high proportion of postdoctoral fellows, visiting fellows, and temporarily joint-appointed NUS faculty. It specialised in bringing Asian and Western scholars together in frequent conferences, from which emerged many international publications. Its own publications include an on-line Working Paper Series (268 by 2018), a Newsletter "ARI News", and an Annual Report.

'15 Years of ARI: Research Excellence and its Challenges in Practice,' ARI News 39 (March 2017), pp.4-6.
