The Asteroid Mining Corporation Limited (AMC) was founded in March 2016 in Liverpool by Mitch Hunter-Scullion.[1]

The Company[edit]

The AMC is the first company in the UK dedicated to space resource activities. Established in 2016, it’s run by Mitch Hunter-Scullion, who set up the company when he was 20 years old[2] after his Liverpool Hope University dissertation on the topic. [3]

Funding[edit]

The AMC launched its crowdfunding on 29th June 2018 to collect £230,000 to fund the small satellite development[4] of the Asteroid Prospecting Satellite One (APS1), which will aim to spectrally identify the composition of 5,000 Near Earth Asteroids to identify Platinum Group deposits to mine.[5][6] The company is launching APS1 from India, because it is orders of magnitude cheaper.[7] Through the process of Reflectance Spectroscopy where the sensor analyses the light being reflected from the target asteroid, the chemical make-up can be determined.[8] Once the AMS has this information, it will then use it to compile a database of asteroids that are closest to Earth and cheapest to fly to, that contains the most Platinum and Gold that the AMC will sell access to. The revenues from the Space Resource Database will be used to fund its own Asteroid Mining mission in the mid to late 2020’s.[9][10][11][12]

The Objectives[edit]

The main objective of the AMC is to extract, process and use materials derived from the asteroids known to exist near Earth and further afield for sale on Earth, in quantities that rival the annual production on land and that would make profitable resource of asteroids.[13]The AMC is aiming at all materials such as Platinum group (rhodium, palladium, iridium, etc.[14]) common in asteroid[15] [16][17]and Ferrous metals, Rare Earth minerals to Carbon and volatile compounds such as water.[18] The AMC estimated that some metallic asteroids could contain 10,000 tons of gold and 100,000 tons of platinum.[19] In addition, the AMC explains that "if you mean that ton ton of platinum costs about £ 25 million, and an asteroid with a radius of 25 m can contain up to 29 tons of platinum based on known meteorite samples. If we take into account other metals of the platinum group, then only one small asteroid can cost up to $ 3 billion."[20][21] Such mother lodes could address shortages of precious metals for IT and other industries on Earth, but they could also be used for space-based manufacturing, drastically reducing the construction cost of space stations.[22] In order to achieve such purpose, the AMC has created the following roadmap.[23]

The UK Space Resource Activities Bill[edit]

Under Article VI of the Outer Space Treaty, States should authorize and supervise space activities conducted by their nationals. Thus, the AMC is currently lobbying the development of the British law on the extraction of minerals in outer space, but also on the international scene.[24] In the meantime, the founder, Mitch Hunter-Scullion has been accepted as an observer of the Hague Space Resources Governance Working Group, which consists of more than 60 members from all over the world, aiming at stimulate international dialogue on the regulation of space mining.[25] The main issue now is the work on property rights, who and how will be considered requirements for the development of asteroids - within individual states or within the UN.[26]
