Atul Pathak OBE (born 4 February 1961) is a British-Indian businessman and philanthropist. He is one of the UK's most successful franchise entrepreneurs and runs thirty-six McDonald's restaurants across London and Berkshire and is the managing director of Appt Corporation Ltd.

Biography[edit]

Pathak was born in India in 1961. His father was a coalminer and his mother was a teacher.[1] He is one of three sons. As a university student, Atul worked at restaurants in order to pay for his tuition. He studied economics, English and geography and came to the UK in 1984 after graduating.[2]

Career[edit]

After arriving in the UK, Pathak worked in a cash and carry where he worked 13-hour shifts for £10 a day before going on to work in hotel management and eventually buying his own bed and breakfast.[3][4] Pathak established his first McDonald's franchise in Hanwell in 2003 and quickly established another in Southall.[5] Pathak has significantly grown his franchise, which now employs over 3,000 people and serves over 24 million customers each year.[6] Pathak has won a number of awards including the Asian Lite Business Awards in 2012, the Pride of Punjab Award in 2013 and was named the National Grid Responsible Business Champion in 2015.[7]

In 2015, Pathak received his OBE for Service to Entrepreneurship in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.[8] In 2017, he was named as one of the Leaders of the Decade Creating a Better World for All by the Women Economic Forum.[9]

In April 2017, Pathak welcomed Prime Minister Theresa May at his newly opened restaurant in Maidenhead.[10]

Philanthropy[edit]

Pathak is also significantly involved in philanthropy. He has raised and donated more that £1 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provide parents of hospitalised children with a place to stay during treatment.[11] Pathak has donated a percentage of his company's annual sales and has set up fundraising activities in order to support the charity.

In addition to this, in 2014 Pathak established the Atul Pathak Community Awards, which offer financial assistance and Appt Corporation's support to charities based in the communities where his restaurants are located.[12] The awards are held each year in the House of Commons.

Personal Life[edit]

Pathak now lives in Iver, Buckinghamshire. He his married and has two children. His son is an entrepreneur and his daughter is a doctor.[13] He is a fan of cricket.[14] His personal heroes include Bhagat Singh, an Indian revolutionary, and Mahatma Gandhi.[15] He is Hindu and is a trustee of a Hindu Temple and Community Centre. Despite being Hindu, he is an executive member of the British Sikh Association and also sponsors the local church Christmas procession on Southall Broadway in order to promote interfaith harmony.
