Avinash Nanda is an Indian television commercial and film director with a career spanning more than 25 years.

Born and brought up in Odisha, Avinash moved to Mumbai (than Bombay) in the 80s and soon established himself as a director of television commercials along with his brother Abhimanyu Mishra. Lately, he has been making the right noise with his biopic short film, ‘Silver Gandhi.[1]’ that has so far garnered more than 25 national and international awards.

Biography[edit]

Avinash Nanda, television commercial and film director, born in 1968 in Odisha, has directed more than 450 television commercials[2] for both national and international clients over the last 25 years.

Having passed out from Ravenshaw College, in Cuttack, Odisha in the late 80s, Avinash Nanda moved to Mumbai and entered the advertising world as a television commercial director.

In 2012, Avinash worked on the pre-production of his maiden Hindi feature film ‘Life Reboot Nahi Hoti'[3] as a director, a film that ultimately did not see the light of day. In 2014, he set up his own production house in Mumbai – Contrapunto Communication[2] to cater to television commercials and feature films. Post starting Contrapunto, Avinash’s first major Hindi feature film as a co-director has been ‘Rangdari'[4] staring television actor Gaurav Chopra and Kajal Yadav along with a bevy of other top Bollywood supporting actors in the casts list.

In 2016, Avinash Nanda directed ‘Two Desires and a Dream'[5], a film starring world’s first quadriplegic actor[6] Jitendra K. Biswal[7] in the lead role. This film deals with the feelings of a man who has serious physical disability and his inner desires and emotions and his growing love for a social celebrity whom he meets one day. The film released in 2016[8]

Avinash Nanda has worked with some of the major stars from the world of cricket and film industry such as Sachin Tendulkar, Govinda, Bipasha Basu, Soha Ali Khan, Kapil Dev, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Late Amrish Puri, Isha Khoppikar, Ayesha Jhulka, Shakti Kapoor among others.

Some of the brands for whom Avinash has directed television commercials include Campa Cola, Campus Shoes, Dainik Jagran, Style Shoes, Action Shoes, Rupa Leggings, Lalchand Jewellers, Bhatia Cloth House, Mayfair Hotels and Resorts, Bridgestone Tyres, Frankfinn Airhostess Academy, Mortein, Luminous Invertors & Air Coolers, Microtek, Okaya Batteries, Prestige Watch, etc.

His latest short film ‘Silver Gandhi[9]’, is a biopic on the life of a young 24-year old Mohan Mahapatra who has dedicated his life in spreading the message of ‘Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan’ (Clean India Mission) across the country. The film is an sincere attempt to showcase the life of Mohan Mahapatra who has travelled across 7 states bare feet, dressed as Mahatma Gandhi and his body covered in silver paint, to spread the message of cleanliness and hygiene. The film has television actor Hiten Tejwani in the lead role as Mohan Mahapatra. The film has so far won more than 25 national and international awards at various film festivals.

His docudrama 'The History of Tea' recently won the 2021 Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival Award in the Best Documentary Film category.[10].
