B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola (Bengali: বি এ এফ শাহীন কলেজ কুর্মিটোলা), also known as BAFSK, is a school and college in Dhaka Cantonment, Dhaka, Bangladesh.[3][4][5][6] It was established on 1 January 1972[1] and is managed by the Bangladesh Air Force.[7] Students from class KG to class XII are taught here. It is one of the six Bangladesh Air Force Shaheen College. It has both Bangla and English version school and college. Although it is mainly for the children of Bangladesh Air Force personnel but the children of civilians can also study in this college.

History[edit]

B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola was established as ‘Air Force School’ on 1 January 1972.[1] The school was re-named as ‘B A F Shaheen School’ in 1980. In 1982, it was again re-named as ‘B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola’ and upgraded to class XII. B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola is being managed by the Bangladesh Air Force under the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. 'Education, Restraint and Discipline' is the motto of this college.[8] In 2010, English version curriculum has been introduced at B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola along with the existing Bangla version.

B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola is located in Dhaka Cantonment, Dhaka, Bangladesh[9] and it is situated at BAF Base Bangabandhu. The educational institution is located at one end of the airport runway.

B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola has a school building & a college building, an English version school, a playground, a canteen and a Shaheed Minar. The EIIN (Educational Institute Identification Number) of B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola is 107859[9] and the college code is 1002.[2]

Admission procedure[edit]

In the beginning of each academic session about 300 students are admitted in 7 sections of KG class; while in other classes new students are admitted through advertisement and admission tests. B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola has a total of 55 sections from class KG to XII including Bangla and English version. It may be mentioned that in this college preference is given for the children of Bangladesh Air Force personnel. Admission in XI classes are done as per the rules and regulations of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka.[10]

Library[edit]

B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola has a library. Students can use the library during the tiffin period. The library is rich in newspapers, magazines, periodicals along with textbooks, stories, novels and general knowledge books. The library has about 5,000 (five thousand) books.[11]

Medical[edit]

During college time, a doctor and a lady doctor provide services at all times including the medical supplies needed to provide first aid to students.[12]

ISSB[edit]

A written test is conducted for the students of class XI–XII at B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola for appointment as officers in the Bangladesh Air Force. Students who pass the test are directly selected for ISSB (In normal case a candidate have to appear in a preliminary written test as a selection process for ISSB).

Playground[edit]

Co-curricular activities[edit]

House activities[edit]

House activities are conducted at B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola. All the students and teachers of the college have to be members of any one of these 5 houses e.g. Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq, Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah and Dr. Qudrat-i-Khuda. All students are required to wear a house badge of the prescribed color of their house along with the college uniform. Champion and runner-up houses are selected from these 5 houses every year on the basis of points in co-educational activities like sports activities, cultural, general knowledge, quiz, debate, PT-parade etc.[15]

BNCC[edit]

Students of class VIII, IX and XI of B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola get the opportunity to participate as Air Unit Cadets of BNCC.[16]

Air Scout[edit]

B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola is conducting activities of 4 units of Air Scout with students from class VI to X. At present the number of members of these units including Bangla and English version is about 150.[17][18]

Debating Club[edit]

At present, about 40 students including Bangla and English version of B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola are active members of the Debating Club.[19]

Science Club[edit]

The current number of members of the Science Club including Bangla and English version of B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola is about 100.[20]

College Magazine[edit]

B A F Shaheen College Kurmitola publishes the college magazine 'Probaho' every year. Students and teachers of class KG to VII enrich the college magazine with stories, poems, essays, paintings, real-life experiences, travel stories, etc. Besides, the annual programs and important activities of the college, education and co-curricular activities, results and glorious achievements, pictures of class-based students etc. are also published in the magazine.[21]
