Babcock Canada

Babcock Canada, formally Canadian Submarine Management Group (CSMG), is a Canadian Support Services Company serving the Government of Canada.[1]

It currently provides naval in-service support to the Royal Canadian Navy, under the Victoria class submarine In-Service Support Contract. The company is a subsidiary of Babcock International. [2]

History[edit]

Babcock Canada was established in early 2008 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Babcock International Group. Originally incorporated as Canadian Submarine Management Group (CSMG). In late 2010, CSMG was rebranded as Babcock Canada Inc. The company has approximately 400 employees in Canada, with presences in Ottawa, Halifax, and Victoria.

Contracts[edit]

Victoria In-Service Support Contract[edit]

The $1.5 Billion, 15 year Victoria In-Service Support Contract was awarded to Babcock Canada on June 30, 2008.

The VISSC is a comprehensive, complex alternate service delivery contract to address the maintenance, repair and overhaul, documentation and management of four Ex-Royal Navy Upholder Class, 2400 ton diesel-electric submarines. These submarines, renamed respectively HMCS VICTORIA, WINDSOR, CORNER BROOK and CHICOUTIMI (the Victoria Class) were accepted into Royal Canadian Navy service between 2000 and 2004.

Work under the VISSC is broadly defined by five areas of service delivery, including; project management; records support; engineering support; materiel and logistics support, and maintenance support to include extended docking work periods.

On July 4, 2013, The Government of Canada exercised a five-year  $531million extension option for the Victoria In-Service Support Contract with Babcock Canada Inc.

On May 31, 2018, Babcock was awarded a $384m three year extension of the Victoria In-Service Support Contract[4]

Canadian Coast Guard[edit]

On Oct 11, 2013, Babcock entered into a five year teaming agreement with Chantier Davie Canada Inc. The team concentrated on opportunities for the Canadian Coast Guard.[5]

On May 18, 2014, the federal government awarded a $6.5 million contract to Babcock Canada Inc. for refit work for Canadian Coast Guard ship CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent.

On October 31, 2014, Babcock Canada was awarded a $4.5million contract for refit work on the CCGS Des Groseilliers. The shipyard portion of the work was carried out by Chantier Davie Inc., a sub-contractor to Babcock Canada.

Other Contracts[edit]

In 2015, Babcock Canada was awarded a $1.6 million contract for the replacement of High Frequency (HF) Monitor Receiver Systems at select Department of National Defence facilities across Canada.  In addition to equipment modernization, Babcock Canada also delivered associated console operator and technician training for the new systems.[6]
