BACH Equipment is a Swiss outdoor sports brand, founded in May 1972 by Jim Hayes in Waterford, Ireland. It focuses on technical backpacking, hiking and trekking backpacks, travel bags, camping tents, camping furniture and other outdoor gear.

History[edit]

Originally named ″The Great Bach Packing And Construction Company Limited″[1], the BACH′s first products were trekking backpacks.

A team of 7 people produced their first backpacks with an outer frame based on the well-known Camp Trails backpacks from the USA. In 1982 the company patented Orthoflex - first fully adjustable internal frame back system.[2]

At the same time, BACH also produce backpacks on behalf of the third parties (for example for Lowe Alpine and The North Face). Despite all this, in September 1989, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. Beat Vogt, Purchasing Manager at Swiss outdoor equipment sales company, made a partnership with the company and found a solution for Bach Hi-Tech Leisure Ltd[3] First, a Swiss investor takes over BACH. Then Martin Wiesmann, a Swiss mountain guide and backpacker, moved to Ireland to join the company. [4] The small collection continues to be produced in Kilkenny in Ireland. In the late nineties, BACH, as one of the last European manufacturers, moved parts of its production to Asia. In June 2004, BACH reduced production in Kilkenny and expanded production in Vietnam for the 2005 season. Kilkenny will remain the production site for some of the large trekking backpacks. [5]

In February 2019, a Swiss outdoor sport brand Scott Sports SA announced BACH ownership and organizing the global distribution of Bach Backpacks.[6] In 2022 Swiss company Bach Backpacks changed its name to Bach Equipment. In 2022, BACH acquired product lines and production details from the Dutch brand Nigor, and after integrating its design team, the company is now expanding to include producing tents, camping furniture and related goods.[7]
