Early Life[edit]

Bartolomeo was born in 1739 to a merchant class family in the city of Lima in Peru. When he was just 3 years old, his father Jose Vargas Del Mar joined Juan Santos Atahualpa [1] in his rebellion against all non-native peoples in Peru. Jose would be killed by a group of Spanish soldiers after he attempted to attack them while they were sleeping. In 1754, at the age of 15, Bartolomeo followed in his fathers footsteps and joined Juan Santos Atahualpa

Between the ages of 6 and 15, Bartolomeo helped his mother maintain his family's store that his father owned before he was killed. Their store sold pottery that his mother made as well as shoes that his father, who was a well renowned cobbler, made. Bartolomeo was taught at a young age how to make shoes, so he was able to take over for his father, but not until he turned 10.

Rebellion[edit]

In 1754, Bartolomeo joined Juan Santos Atahualpa in his rebellion against all of the non-native peoples that lived in Peru. He was notorious among the other fighters for being wild and ruthless in his pursuits, which many believed to come from his father's death early in his life. After just 3 months, it was rumored that Bartolomeo took part in the deaths of over 200 people.

Bartolomeo was known to torture his targets before killing them. Some speculated this was because he believed they deserved it after what happened to his father, but others noticed the joy that torturing his victims brought to him and began to worry for Bartolomeo. His preferred method of torture was waterboarding, which he would do by taking his victim to a nearby body of water. He would then blindfold his victims while he held their clothes over their faces and, using a bucket, he would pour water over their faces. Bartolomeo had to torture his victims in private however because Juan Santos Atahualpa was strongly against this. He believed this was wrong and nearly kicked Bartolomeo out of his group when he found out what he was doing.

Fleeing to America[edit]

In 1755, Juan Santos Atahualpa discovered that Bartolomeo was still torturing his victims and confronted him about it. After a long argument, Bartolomeo was removed from the rebellion and told to return home. He was furious at this though and went on a rampage, killing 3 members of Atahualpa's militia before fleeing the city.

After 2 years of living by himself in the Peruvian forrest, Bartolomeo decided to go to North America. He found a ship that was sailing north and he bribed the captain to let him on. The ship, which was carrying sugar and fruit, was headed to a port in New York where Bartolomeo got off and found people living in an area called Christian Hook. While in Christian Hook, Bartolomeo learned how to fish for oysters and became one of the most successful fisherman in the area.

Legacy[edit]

While living in Christian Hook, Bartolomeo adopted the last name Oceanside, based off his Spanish name "Del Mar" meaning "Of the Sea". In 1792, at the age of 53, Bartolomeo became sick and couldn't fish anymore, which hurt his thriving business. Bartolomeo died in 1793 at the age of 54, leaving behind no family.

The townspeople decided to change the name of Christian Hook to Oceanside as a way of honoring the man who helped create their thriving oyster business.
