Bastl Instruments is a Czech electronics manufacter that specializes in the production of electronic musical instruments, audio processors, and recording studio equipment.[1] Established in 2013, it has since created a number of notable digital and analog synthesizers, samplers, Eurorack modules and systems. The company has also expanded into the fields of music education, recording, and event production,[2] and Bastl has grown to be one of the staples of the Central and Eastern European electronic music scene.[3][4][5]
History[edit]
In 2011, the Czech bandmates and media artists Václav Peloušek and Ondřej Merta started a project called Standuino[6] as a tribute to the DIY electronic music scene (so-called "Bastlíři") of former Czechoslovakia, namely Standa Filip, developing experimental audio devices with Arduino and other DIY-friendly electronics. Throughout workshops and various art exhibitions, the duo created several instruments like the granular synthesis-based sampler microGranny 1.0 and the digital synthesizer fraAngelico.
Two years later, in 2013, the organization was transformed into Bastl Instruments, a private company dedicated to building musical instruments, and the Trinity line of synth modules was introduced.[7][8]
In 2014, Bastl's microGranny 2.0 was announced[9] and Bastl transformed into a community that has been working on several music-related projects and other activities.[10]
The product line of unique wooden Eurorack modules was revealed in 2015, and since then, many new modules have been added.
In 2016, Bastl Instruments joined forces with Casper Electronics[11] and gave life to the analog logic computer bitRanger and the semi-modular synthesizer softPop.[12] This collaboration later sparked the idea for the development of the miniature modular synthesizer Kastle[13] and the audio mixer Dude.[14]
The digital tape delay and audio effects processor Thyme was released in 2018[15][16] and in 2020, the company announced the Midilooper,[17][18] a one-of-a-kind looper for MIDI messages.
