Bedenham Pier Explosion
Explosion at Bedenham Pier 14 July 1950 new article content ...
At 18:45 on 14 July 1950 the ammunition pier located in the north western part of Portsmouth Harbour exploded. The ammunition was intended to be loaded on a ship sailing to the Far East. 19 people were injured but there were no fatalities.[1]
Some 5,000 tonnes of explosives ignited destroying the pier itself and 9 barges moored to it.[2] The figure of 13,000 tonnes is given in Depth Charge!: Mines, Depth Charges and Underwater Weapons, 1914-1945 by Chris Henry. This work also records that windows were broken as far away as Winchester (Available through Amazon)
This is a separate event from the explosion of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary RFA Bedenham on 27 April 1951. <ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosion_of_the_RFA_Bedenham,/ref>
