From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Bernard Peugniez (born 24 December 1947) is the French author of a tour guide for all the Cistercian monasteries in Europe, formerly and presently inhabited, male and female.

Life and work[edit]

Professional life[edit]

Peugniez was born in Coutiches (Nord), where he first attended school, followed by study at Solesmes (1958–1965) and Saint-Amand-les-Eaux (1966). He studied at Lille Catholic University from 1966 to 1968, majoring in Agronomy, which he taught at Lille until 1974. He then became a social worker in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux and served from 1982 to 2000 in Cambrai. He then became director of Social Services at Valloires Abbey. He retired in 2008 and now lives in Douriez.

Cistercian Studies[edit]

After Peugniez discovered the former Cistercian abbey in Vaucelles (south of Cambrai), it kindled in him an interest in the history and geography of the famous monastic order. He undertook systematic field trips to visit all of the Cistercian sites in Europe, devoting substantial time to the project which resulted in three publications (1994, 2001 and 2012).[1] The books' content got larger and larger, resulting in the monumental volume of text and photos published in 2012 and devoted to over 2,000 Cistercian monasteries arranged according to geographical location.[2] The routier of 2001 was described by one reviewer as a "valuable contribution", "indispensable for all who study French Cistercian monasteries".[3] The routier that appeared ten years later was deemed "a life's accomplishment", "a description of 2000 Cistercian abbeys", "rich in historical and architectural information", "in sum, a wonderful book".[4]
