Bhaskar Rao (24th May 1964 - Present) is an Indian Police Service Officer.[1] from Bangalore, Karnataka. He is the 33rd Commissioner of Police[2] for Bangalore City[3], incumbent since 2nd of August, 2019[4]. He was born in Tamil Nadu[5] but, his original ancestry is from Karnataka[6]. He completed his higher studies from Bangalore University[7] and is an IPS officer[8] of Karnataka cadre – 1990 batch[9]. He has served in various challenging and important positions in the Police Department. He completed his basic training at Lalbahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie[10] and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad[11].

Early life[edit]

Born on 24th May 1964 at Nungambakkarm, Chennai, India[12], Bhaskar Rao was brought up in Karnataka. Bhaskar Rao did his early schooling in various parts of Bihar and Bengaluru. He started schooling in Mount Carmel School, Bokaro Thermal Power Station, Kamala Nehru Makkala Mandira, Bangalore, Sri Kumaran’s Children Home, Bangalore, Notre Dame Academy and St. Michaels High School, Patna, Bihar. He completed his PUC from St. Joseph’s Arts & Science College, Bangalore[13] and Degree from National College, Jayanagar, Bangalore[14] in Psychology, Economics and Sociology.  He completed MA in Economics from Bangalore University. He started his career as an Army officer later worked as a Lecturer in Economics at NMKRV Women’s College, Bengaluru, and then as a Research Fellow at the Institute for Social and Economic Change. He joined the police department as Superintendent of Police and served in Mandya, Davanagere, Shimoga, Hubli, Dharwad, Coorg and, Bangalore Rural District.[15][16][17][18][19] He was an active member of NCC[20] (Armored Corp) and NSS (National Service Scheme)[21].[22]


Family Background[edit]

Bhaskar Rao is the son of Sri R.S. Raghunath Rao and Smt. Shakunthala Rao. His Father Sri Raghunath Rao served as an Engineer-in-Chief with the Government of Bihar, and his mother Smt. Shakunthala worked as a teacher.

Bhaskar Rao is interested in outdoor activities, especially cycling. He is a long-distance runner and has participated in many marathons such as: Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, Air Tel Delhi Half Marathon, Pondicherry Marathon, Bangalore Midnight Marathon, Kaveri Trail Half Marathon[23][24]. He likes driving and other adventure sports. Bhaskar Rao is also an avid reader of self-improvement books. Being an environment lover and, promoter of Empowerment of Constables and Lower Rank Officers, he has identified himself with several developmental causes.

  • Confidence-building measures among American Companies post 9/11 held in Bangalore as a Superintendent of Police, Bangalore District.
  • Affected Transport Reforms for the issue of Driving Session, Electronic Driver Testing Track and vehicle Registration using Smart Cards and discontinuing RC books, as Commissioner for Transport.
  • Introduced, first-ever reservation of web-based Bus seat booking called ‘Any Where Any Time Advance Reservation’ (AWATAR) similar to Airline Seat Reservation system.
