Bhimsain Himatrai Khurana (mononymously known as Bhimsain; born November 24,1936-17 April 2018) as is a prominent Indian filmmaker and animator.[1][2][3]He is well known as the Father of Indian animation[4][5][6] and one of the pioneers of the parallel cinema movement of the 70s. He is a recipient of an unprecedented 16 President's National Awards[7], 5 Filmfare Awards and 7 assorted international awards and is known for cult classics like Ek Anek Aur Ekta, Gharaonda, Doooriyan, Vartmaan and Chhoti Badi Baatein.[8][9][10] He was the Founder and President of 22-time National Award-winning production house, Climb Media India.[11][12]

Early Life and family[edit]

Born in 1936 in Multan, Pakistan, Bhimsain moved to Lucknow during partition. He trained in Fine Arts and Classical Music at the Lucknow University[10], after which he started working with Ram Mohan and Disney animator Clair Weeks as a background artist at the Films Division of Indi.[13] Bhimsain now lives in Mumbai with his wife, Neelam Khurana, who had worked as an executive producer on his feature film Tum Laut Aao (1983; starring Ravi Baswani and Karan Razdan) and his documentary on Jamnalal Bajaj, Kathni Karni Eksi (1989).

He also writes poetry, sings, paints and composes music. His recent book The Incomplete Story of Indian Animation was launched at the Mumbai International Film Festival in 2016 by veteran Kiran Shantaram and actor Jackie Shroff[14], and was also released by Governor of Maharashtra C. Vidyasagar Rao.[15]

Bhimsain is the father of filmmaker and animator Kireet Khurana.[16][17][18]

Career[edit]

In 1970, Bhimsain made his debut with his first animation short The Climb which earned him the Silver Hugo Award in the Chicago Film Festival.

Soon after, he directed and produced several animation and ad films. Na, Ek-Do, Fire, Munni, Freedom is a Thin Line, Mehman, Kahani Har Zamne Ki, Business is People are some of his prestigious works which won him National and International awards and acclaim. He further established his repute as a director and producer with his landmark animation short Ek Anek Aur Ekta. This film got him another National Award in the same year and has had over 500 screening on Indian Television (Doordarshan).

After being hailed as a pioneer in Indian animation, Bhimsain diversified into Feature film production. In 1976 his first feature film Gharaonda became an unprecedented success. Hailed as a milestone by the public and press alike it fetched more than 30 awards including 5 Filmfare awards. He himself received Best Critics award for the film.[19][20][21]This was followed by two other successful feature films, of which Doooriyan bagged yet another Filmfare award. Tum Laut Aao won more accolades and rave reviews, which further strengthened his credentials as a sensitive filmmaker.[22]

In 1985, Bhimsain ventured in T.V.serial production with a highly successful and popular sitcom Chhoti Badi Baatein based on superstitions[23]. During the same period he also made several profound and purposeful documentaries like Der Aaye Durust Aaye, Shaadi Shaadi, Jeevan Rahasya, Setu and Roshni[24].[25] His documentary Kathni Karni Eksi fetched him two National awards in 1990.

In 1991, he revitalized the Indian animation scenario by making India’s first computer aided animation series Lok Gatha based on folk tales. This path breaking series fetched him 3 National awards. Apart from this he also made India’s largest animation project till date in the form of a 26 episode series Vartmaan aired on Doordarshan.[26]

Accolades and recognition[edit]

Bhimsain also has the distinction of being the first Indian animator to jury 2 International festivals- Annecy Animation Festival, France (known as The Cannes of Animation), Ottawa Animation Film Festival, Canada besides being the Chairman of President’s National awards Jury in 2005.[27]

He is also credited with the Internationally co-produced Indian animation films, Locked and Trade with the National Film Board of Canada.[28][29][30] His animation film The Prince and the Magician won the 5th Mumbai International award for the best film in 1998.[31] The same film has been selected for the screening purpose in Matita Film Festival, Italy, 1999.

Bhimsain has 16 National and 7 International awards to his credit, apart from bagging many prestigious popular awards. Recently he was awarded the Jurors Award at National Film Festival 2002 for his film Orchestra and Lifetime Achievement Awards by FICCI-Frames (2005) and Arena Animation Academy (2003).[32] There was also an Animation Retrospective of his works, inaugurated by film-maker Amole Gupte, held in January 2018 at Films Division India to honour his achievements.[33][34][35]

Climb Media (formerly Climb Films) christened after his award-winning animation film The Climb is a versatile film production company, which has been running successfully since the last 35 years and is still going strong.[36]
