Bianca I. Laureano is a sex educator and sexologist known for co-founding ANTE UP!.[1] and the Woman of Color Sexual Health Network (WOCSHN)[2], as well as her work as the Lead Educator for the Netflix film Crip Camp[3]. She currently lives in Oakland, CA[4]

Career[edit]

Laureano is currently an Instructor for the California Institute of Integral Studies, where she teaches a “Sexual Attitudes Reassessment” class as part of Sex Therapy Certification[5]. She founded ANTE UP!,[6] which creates a curriculum for professional development focused on social-emotional learning.[7] She is a founding member of WOCSHN, which advocates for the inclusion of women of color in sexual health fields.[8][9] Laureano was the Lead Educator for the Netflix film Crip Camp and created disability justice lesson plans for the film.[10] She is a co-founder of the Latinegrx Project.[11] She is a writer and alchemist for the Center for Solutions to Online Violence.[12]

Laureano has published a book and numerous articles in newspapers and platforms such as The New York Times,[13] Medium,[14] and Prism.[15] Laureano has also been featured on many podcasts like Smart Sex, Smart Love with Dr. Joe Kort's February 3, 2020 episode “Bianca Laureano on Social Justice Education,” the Sex and Chronic Illness February 19, 2021 episode “Disability Justice: Bianca Laureano,” and T.S.O.B. with Dr. G’s May 26, 2021 episode “Intersectional Sex Ed (ft. Bianca Laureano)” to name a few.[16] As Director of Education and Regional Programs at Scenarios USA, she wrote the curriculum What’s the REAL DEAL about Love and Solidarity in 2015.[9] In 2017, she edited and published WOCSHN’s curriculum Communication MixTape: Speak On It Vol 1.[17] In 2018, Laureano wrote the discussion guide on sexual and reproductive justice for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.[18] In 2018, she also wrote Writing Ourselves Into Existence: Healing Through Collaborative Curriculum Development, which was published in the Journal of Critical Thought and Praxis.[19] She wrote the foreword to Sonya Renee Taylor’s Celebrate Your Body in 2018[20] and the foreword to Lisa Speidel’s and Micah Jones’ The Edge of Sex in 2019.[21] In Clark et al.’s 2019 Orientation: Teaching about Identity, Attraction, and Behavior, Laureano wrote “What’s the REAL DEAL about Sexual Orientation?” and “The Veracity of Coming Out.”[2] Moreover, in 2019, she wrote a chapter on Sexual Attitudes Reassessment (SAR) in the Handbook of Sexuality Leadership, which was edited by James C. Wadley.[22]

Personal Life and Education[edit]

Laureano was born and raised in the Washington, DC metro area and is a first-generation Puerto Rican American.[4] She currently lives with her core Partner G in Oakland, CA.[1][23] In May of 2020, she received an honorary PhD for her work on justice, equity, and inclusion in the US sexuality field.[1] Her other degrees include two master's degrees and a Certified Sexuality Educator Supervisor and Certified Sexuality Educator.[24] She is also an American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists certified sexuality educator.[23] Laureano attended the University of Maryland, College Park and graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Individual Studies: Women’s Health and Latino Communities.[4] She attended New York University and received her Master of Arts degree in Human Sexuality Education in 2002.[4] She spent one year as the Program Manager of Adolescent Sexuality, Pregnancy Prevention, and Parenting with the Child Welfare League.[4] She then attended the University of Maryland, College Park in the Department of Women’s studies to earn her second Master of Arts degree.[4] Her second Master of Arts degree was in Women’s Studies focusing on race and racialization, bodies, gender, and sexualities.[4] Laureano received the degree in 2006.[4]
