Background and composition[edit]

Big was produced by Jon Harris.[2] This is Jon's first official song and it was released under Living Life Our Way Entertainment as an introduction record. Jon was inspired to make the song to introduce his way of thinking to the public and differentiate himself from other rappers.[3] The song will be added to Jon's debut album “Who Is Jon Harris” which is set to be released late 2019.[3]

Lyrics[edit]

As an introduction record he starts the song repeating “What’s Up”.[3][4] A theme of the song is “to think big” this is convey during the chorus several times with him saying “I think big, dream big, and I plan big” and also “the only way to do it is to do it big”.[4] Another purpose of the song is to make note that he is not like other rappers.[3] He is known for being different and in “big” he says "To make sure I don't get mistaken for being a trap artist you're glued to" then later explains some of the differences between his style and everyone else's.[4][3] Jon also uses the song to separate himself from his musical peers on a talent level, stating he is not to be confused with the "whack rappers" listeners are used to hearing.[5]

Critical reception[edit]

Critical reception of the song has been mostly positive with praise going to the instrumental and the up lifting chorus. Artistrack notes the production of the track sounds massive along with comparing Jon to JAY-Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Childish Gambino.[6] In an interview with Broad Tube Jon states that the song had mixed reviews with the supporters and critics fighting over the same pieces of the song.[7] The song started gaining overseas popularity when it caught the attention of European music blog A&R Factory who states Harris is among the artist that deserves recognition base on his work of his song Big. They were quoted saying, "...the Hip Hop scene is on its death bed. Yet, as long as there are artists with the ability to wax lyrical with inspiring verses, there’s still a ray of hope for the genre" referring to Harris' delivery and inspirational content.[8] Along with them, 44faced also saw the song as an inspirational piece noting that it's energy can help motivate people to push through a state that holds them back. They state the comparisons to a championship-like feel almost reminiscent of the song "Victory" by Puff Daddy.[9]
