Biosense Technologies Private Limited is a medical technology company which designs and develops low-cost diagnostic devices for chronic diseases in India [1, 2]. Founded in the year 2008, by a team of doctors and biomedical engineers Biosense is involved in device manufacturing to provide solution for anemia, malnutrition and diabetes [1]. Based out of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Biosense works on developing point of care (POC) diagnostics [3, 4]. Biosense started working on indigenously designed low-cost healthcare screening focused on maternal health [5].

Biosense Technologies started in the year 2008, and registered under CIN no: U85100MH2008PTC188729 and Registration Number: 188729, was a college project until the year 2013 [1, 6]. The founding members of Biosense include Dr. Abhishek Sen, Dr. Yogesh Patil, Dr. Myshkin Ingawale and Aman Midha [4].

2011 – Biosense Technologies to be the first college project to be incubated by Villgro-Menterra [1, 7, 8]

2013 – uCheck analyzer approved under section 201(h) of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act  [9]

2013 – US FDA notice to get clearance for the uChek app or the entire urinalysis system inclusive of the strip reader and the test strips [9, 10, 11, 12]

2013 –uChek in the Indiegogo funding platform raised $5,777 [9]

2014 – Biosense lost the U.S. Trademark Registration No. 1,896,713 in a legal battle with Masimo Corporation in the United States District Court, over claims of false advertising, trademark infringement, unfair competition and common law unfair competition [13]

2016 – Menterra Venture Advisors, invested $1 million through direct equity and $2 million in soft funding [1, 14]

Product Portfolio[edit]

Biosense products are connected geo-tagged devices that are involved in prevalence tracking and determining targeted interventions for improved public health outcome [1]. The products in the public space include;

1. ToucHb – ToucHb is a rechargeable battery operated hand-held haemoglobin estimation device [8]. A non-invasive anemia screening device, comes with a software equipped to store and transfer data. The device can also measure oxygen saturation [1, 2, 5]. This device fits over a patient's eyes and measures blood haemoglobin levels using light involving non-invasive scan of the eyelid [15].

2. uCheck – A smartphone-based portable diagnostic system for routine urine analysis [1]. This urinalysis system has been developed in collaboration with Dr. Rohit Srivastava, a professor with Indian Institute of Technology, from the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering [16]. The uChek app screens for 25 different medical conditions like diabetes, kidney, liver, bladder, urinary tract infections, pre-eclampsia and hypertension [4, 9, 17].

3. SYNC – An indigenous glucometer with bluetooth for data storage and trend analysis [1].

4. ANM Kit – A remote diagnostic kit for screening and monitoring of malnutrition at the sub-centre and anganwadi levels [1].

Business[edit]

Biosense Technologies' business model involves distribution of devices and consumables among NGOs working in public health sector, private hospitals and partner pharmaceutical companies [1]. The devices have been reported to be in use in 2000 villages across the country by 2500 physicians [14]. In the year 2017, Biosense diagnostic tests numbered at over 600,000 [1].
