Origins and Politics[edit]
Black Rose Anarchist Federation was founded after a series of Class Struggle Anarchist Conferences that led to a merger of local and regional organizations in 2013.[1] The group is described by Andrew Cornell as part of “a distinctly class-struggle-oriented anarchism [that] reemerged with the formation of the North Eastern Federation of Anarchist Communists … succeeded in the United States by groups such as the Black Rose/Rosa Negra Anarchist Federation.”[2]
The organization advocates libertarian socialism and anarcho-communism and is influenced by the Latin American anarchist current especifismo, which emphasizes the need for specific anarchist political organization, involvement in social struggles and coherent political strategy.[3][4][5] A 2018 strategy document calls for building “popular power” or independent institutions and organizations of the working class.[6]
Activity[edit]
An early activity of the group was organizing the "Struggling to Win: Anarchists Building Popular Power In Chile" tour of two Chilean anarchists in 2014 with events in over 20 cities.[7] Members participated in AFem2014, an international anarchist feminist conference in London, and later wrote a critical reflections on feminism and anarchism.[8] A member was featured in a Vice News segment looking at left-wing "Antifa" protests in Portland and their conflicts with right-wing "alt-right" protesters in June 2017.[9] The group released a series of YouTube videos in 2018 "A Year In Popular Power" which highlight their organizing work with unions and community groups.[10]
