bluShift Aerospace is an employee-owned aerospace firm based in Brunswick, Maine. It is designing a suborbital sounding rocket called Brown Dwarf 10 and a lightweight orbital rocket called Red Dwarf 50, which will commercially launch smallsats and cubesats to low Earth orbit.
bluShift Aerospace was founded in October, 2014 by Sascha Deri, the company's CEO. It was founded to develop a proprietary, bio-derived solid fuel for use in hybrid rockets capable of reaching low Earth orbit. bluShift is also designing a line of rockets that will use this proprietary fuel. The company is an active player in a larger, ongoing effort to foster a Maine-based smallsat launch sector.
The company began testing and characterizing its bio-derived solid fuel in 2014. During this time they determined that the bluShift fuel can store more energy than conventional hybrid rocket fuel cores, making orbital launches of small payloads viable.
In 2016 the company moved from Massachusetts to the former Brunswick Naval Air Station in Maine. The intent of the move was to create aerospace jobs in Maine, and to position bluShift at a competitive latitude for launching to polar orbit.
By the end of 2017 the bluShift team optimized their solid fuel. Based on the fuel characteristics, the team spent 2018 researching and optimizing their hybrid engine design.
bluShift plans to begin low-altitude test launches before the end of 2020, and begin launching to orbit by early 2023. Due to Maine's high latitude, the Red Dwarf 50 will launch almost exclusively to high-inclination and polar orbits.
Brown Dwarf 10
The Brown Dwarf 10 is an expendable single-stage launch vehicle with 10 kilograms (22lb) payload capacity on suborbital trajectories of up to 50-250km (31-93mi). It will utilize "Deuterium" class engines and a composite fuselage.
Red Dwarf 50
The Red Dwarf 50 is an expendable three-stage launch vehicle with 50 kilograms (110lb) payload capacity to low-Earth orbit. It will utilize "Proton2" class engines and a composite fuselage.
