Boondee is a fictional character in Cleverman, portrayed by Tony Briggs. Boondee is a Hairy. A devoted husband to Araluen and loving father to Djukara, Latani and Jirra, he is a resilient spiritual man who sees his own strong pragmatism as the glue holding his family together.
Boondee believes that his family will be unharmed if they shave down and assimilate within the greater community. This is difficult for a man so profoundly connected to his culture – after all, hiding your true self does take its emotional toll – but it’s a price he is willing to pay if it will keep his family safe.
Boondee is old enough to understand what happens to those who try to mess with the humans. Born soon after colonisation, he saw firsthand the devastating effects of white settlement on Australia's Indigenous peoples and, under the instruction of Hairy elders, stepped back to allow the Blackfellas to fight the fight.
Knowing that his people live for 200 years, Boondee is happy to bide his time because things will get better.
